Pontiff Notes Hopes for Charismatic Renewal

VATICAN CITY, MAY 4, 2009 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI is wishing members of the charismatic renewal a revitalized closeness with the crucified and risen Christ. The Pope said this in a telegram signed by his secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, and sent to the Italian chapter of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, who were gathered last weekend in their 32nd national assembly in Rimini, Italy.

The Pope also gave an exhortation to the gathering of some 400,000 members of new ecclesial realities gathered in and around St. Peter's Square on Saturday, the eve of Pentecost.

"The Whole Church Is Only One Great Movement"

VATICAN CITY, JUNE 4, 2006 (Zenit.org).- Here is a translation of the address Benedict XVI gave today before praying the midday Regina Caeli at the end of the Mass of Pentecost. The Pope addressed the faithful gathered in St. Peter's Square.

Dear Brothers and Sisters!
The solemnity of Pentecost invites us to go back to the origins of the Church, which, as the Second Vatican Council affirmed, "by the outpouring of the Spirit, was made manifest" ("Lumen Gentium," No. 2). At Pentecost, the Church was manifested one, holy, catholic and apostolic; it was manifested missionary, with the gift of speaking all the languages of the world, as the good news of the love of God is meant for all peoples.

Papal Homily at Pentecost Mass

"The Holy Spirit Is Love"

VATICAN CITY, JUNE 4, 2006 (Zenit.org).- Here is a translation of Benedict XVI's address at the Mass of Pentecost, which he celebrated today in St. Peter's Square.
* * *
Dear Brothers and Sisters!

On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descended with power on the apostles; thus began the mission of the Church in the world. Jesus himself had prepared the Eleven for this mission by appearing to them on several occasions after his resurrection (cf. Acts 1:3).

Patti Gallagher Mansfield's Address at Vigil

"It Is Not Ourselves That We Preach"

VATICAN CITY, JUNE 4, 2006 Zenit.org).- Here is the address delivered by Patti Gallagher Mansfield, a witness of the start of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, at the end of the meeting of the ecclesial movements and new communities with Benedict XVI. The meeting was held Sunday, eve of Pentecost, in St. Peter's Square.

Dear Holy Father,

With all our hearts we thank you for inviting us to meet with you on this glorious feast of Pentecost. We are your sons and daughters; we are sons and daughters of the Church, children of Mary, and we are the fruit of the Second Vatican Council.

Holy Father, I was given the grace, in February 1967, at a retreat for students from Duquesne University, to experience the baptism in the Holy Spirit, which is at the origin of the Charismatic Renewal.

Luis Fernando Figari's Address at Vigil

"Why the Lord Jesus Knocks at Our Door"

VATICAN CITY, JUNE 4, 2006 (Zenit.org).- Here is a translation of the words of gratitude addressed to Benedict XVI, in the name of ecclesial movements, by Luis Fernando Figari.

Figari, founder of the Christian Life Movement, gave the words at the end of the meeting of new communities with the Pope, held Saturday evening in St. Peter's Square.
* * *
Your Holiness, on the occasion of this celebration of faith, I would like to share something that touches me deeply on meditating on that beautiful passage of Scripture that says: "I am standing at the door, knocking; if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to you and eat with you, and you with me" (Revelation 3:20). The Lord Jesus comes as one who asks to be welcomed. He respectfully knocks at the door and asks to be admitted before entering our personal sphere.

Bishop Clemens' Greeting at Pentecost Vigil "

We Put New Impetus Into Our Future Common Path"

VATICAN CITY, JUNE 4, 2006 (Zenit.org).- Here is a Vatican translation of the greeting addressed by Bishop Josef Clemens, secretary of the Pontifical Council for the Laity, to the meeting of ecclesial movements and new communities with Benedict XVI. The meeting took place Saturday, vigil of Pentecost, in St. Peter's Square.
* * *
Dear Brothers and Sisters!

I cordially greet all of you here present. You have joyfully and promptly accepted the invitation from Benedict XVI to come to this gathering. The celebration will culminate with the first vespers of the solemnity of Pentecost that we shall pray together with the Holy Father.

I wish to extend a cordial welcome to each one of you, to those of you here close by, but in particular to those of you at the far end of St. Peter's Square and in the Via della Conciliazione. We all know that in a celebration of prayer, like ours today, distances do not matter. What really counts is proximity of hearts, unity, the one faith in God present among us. We recall the promise made by Our Lord: "Where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them" (Matthew 18:20).

"The Church Is Always in Combat Against the Beast"

Kiko Argüello's Address at Vigil

Date: 2006-06-04

VATICAN CITY, JUNE 4, 2006 Zenit.org).- Here is a translation of the commentary on Psalm 146 given by Kiko Argüello, founder of the Neocatechumenal Way, on Saturday at Benedict XVI's meeting with ecclesial movements and new communities.
* * *
Most Beloved Father:

Thank you for the opportunity given to me to speak.

We have heard Psalm 146 in which we are invited to praise God because "the Lord builds up Jerusalem."

Jerusalem and above all its temple was rebuilt by Zorobabel and Joshua, a layman and a priest. Before them, Moses and Aaron did so, then Peter and Paul, who are the two witnesses of whom Revelation speaks. We can say: charism and institution. Charism and institution, united, are co-essential to the mission of the Church, said Pope John Paul II at Pentecost in 1998.

Reflection by Father Julián Carrón at Vigil

"Great and Wonderful Are Your Works, Lord"

VATICAN CITY, JUNE 4, 2006 (Zenit.org).- Here is the commentary on a canticle from the Book of Revelation (15:3-4) by Father Julián Carrón, president of the Fraternity of Communion and Liberation, during Saturday's meeting of the ecclesial movements and new communities with Benedict XVI.

"The true protagonist of history is the beggar: Christ who begs for man's heart, and man's heart that begs for Christ." With these words, eight years ago, Father Giussani concluded his address here in St. Peter's Square, kneeling before Pope John Paul II. Today we come back as beggars, even more desirous of Christ, astonished at how Christ has continued begging for our heart.

Address of Andrea Riccardi on Psalm 112

"A Charisma Is a Gift, Not a Utopia"

VATICAN CITY, JUNE 4, 2006 (Zenit.org).- Here is the commentary on Psalm 112 by Andrea Riccardi, founder of the Community of Sant'Egidio, at the meeting of ecclesial movements and new communities in St. Peter's Square on Saturday. The groups met with Benedict XVI at the vigil of Pentecost.

Holy Father,
Fathers and all you friends,

To pray with the psalms on the vigil of Pentecost near the tomb of the Apostle Peter is a spiritual event that we are extremely grateful for, Holy Father. The psalms are precious for people -- like ourselves -- who know not how to pray: They give us an alphabet to address the Lord. With his word, the Lord teaches us how to pray: "Praise, servants of Yahweh, praise the name of Yahweh."

Ecclesial Movements and New Communities:
The Response of the Holy Spirit to Today's Challenge of Evangelization

Excerpt from the Homily by Archbishop Hickey at Act 2 Bible College Official Opening Mass (a Work of the Disciples of Jesus Covenant Community-  Perth

1st December, 2005

I would like to congratulate your leaders on this very bold initiative of a “Bible College”, a school of formation, based very much on Holy Scripture, and for calling it “Acts 2”

We’ve just heard from Acts 2 (the second reading) how the early Christians lived with an intense awareness of the Holy Spirit in their midst. They could already see the power of the Holy Spirit abound, and extraordinary gifts spread in the community. So they lived together and they shared everything. They had enormous trust in God and lived a different way of life that penetrated the pagan Roman & Jewish communities where they lived. There was something happening then, a revolution if you like. A revolution of peace and love that shook society. It was the work of the Holy Spirit through followers of Jesus.

Cardinal Ratzinger on Catholic Charismatic Renewal

What is hopeful at the level of the universal Church - and what is happening right in the heart of the crisis of the Church in the Western world - is the rise of new movements which nobody had planned and which nobody has called into being, but which have sprung spontaneously from the inner vitality of the faith itself. What is manifested in them - albeit subdued - is something like a pentecostal season in the Church. I am thinking, say, of the charismatic movement, of the Cursillos, . . .

Cardinal Ratzinger Affirms Charismatic Renewal

In a recently published book called 'God and the World' in which journalist Peter Seewald, interviews Cardinal Ratzinger, the Cardinal, who is head of the Congregation of the Doctrine of Faith, talked about the Church's need for ongoing renewal. He said, 'She {the Church} does certainly need outbreaks of living spirituality. Forms of that kind, in which a new passion for faith emerges that is not politically contrived but has developed from within, have been important for the Church in every age. We have seen how in the 16th century the renewal did not come from institutional authority but through people who were gripped by God and created new movements. This is happening today in a great variety of forms - the charismatic movement is one of them - and this is, you might say, the consolation the Lord sends us by showing that the Holy Spirit is present and still powerful'.

Jesus is Lord
Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa, OFM, CAP

Fr. Cantalamessa is the preacher to the Papal Household. For the last 21 years he has preached for Pope John Paul II on Fridays during Advent and Lent. He leads numerous formation sessions and retreats throughout the world. Fr. Cantalamessa is a prophetic voice speaking to many people throughout the world. He has a deep passion for Christian unity.

In 1975, while I was a professor of Ancient Christianity at the Catholic University of Milan, I began hearing about a new move in the church, a new spirit, a new way of praying. In the beginning I was very "anti." I told the lady who described this activity to me: "You should never go again to that particular retreat house." I was surprised to see that these people, whom you already realize were part of the charismatic renewal, were not offended by my criticism. They loved me and even asked me to give them teachings.

Archbishop Hickey’s Address to Disciples of Jesus Summer School - Bunbury, on Saturday 19th January 2002 (The Disciples of Jesus Community has been conduction Summers Schools of Evangelisation in all states for many years)

I have been coming to Summer Schools for a while - first at Aquinas, then Bindoon and now here just outside Bunbury. It is a good time for me to come; the week is almost over, a lot of things have happened in your lives, and you are anxious to talk about that and celebrate what the Lord has done for you during the week. I get the benefit of that. I see so many committed young people. Committed in their faith, people that already knew Jesus, others that have come to know Him and already experience the transforming affects that the knowledge and love of Jesus can have in us. So I see that and I hear about it and go away heartened.

A letter from His Holiness Pope John Paul II

From the Vatican, 9 November 1996.

to the participation in the Seventh International Meeting of the Catholic Fraternity of Covenant Communities and Fellowships.

Dear Friends in Christ,

1.  With affection in the Lord I greet the participation in the Seventh International Meeting of the Catholic Fraternity of Covenant Communities and Fellowships.  I thank you for your good wishes and prayers at this time when I am celebrating the Fiftieth Anniversary of my Priestly Ordination.  I see this as an expression of the communion which links you with the Successor of Peter and the universal Church, a communion which you feel deeply and which itself is a sublime gift of the Holy Spirit to Christ’s followers.

Pope John Paul II speaks on Charisms - General Audience March 9, 1994

The Holy Spirit, the giver of every gift and the main principle of the Church's vitality, does not only work through the sacraments. According to St. Paul, he who distributes to each his own gifts as he wills (1 Cor. 12:11), pours out into the People of God a great wealth of graces both for prayer and contemplation and for action.

INSTITUTIONAL AND CHARISMATIC ASPECTS: QUASI COESSENTIAL TO THE CHURCH'S CONSTITUTION

Cardinal J. Francis Stafford,

President of the Pontifical Council for the Laity

New springtime of the Church is signalled by ecclesial movements

On the Vigil of Pentecost 1998 Pope John Paul II invited the members of the ecclesial movements and the new communities in the Church to meet at the Vatican. It was a unique invitation and a unique response, 500,000 persons responded. The Pope said to those gathered in the Square before the tomb of Peter: "[You] are the response of the Holy Spirit to the dramatic challenge at the end of the millennium". He asked the variety of new communities to give "a common witness" in the year dedicated to the Holy Spirit.

THIS IS THE DAY THE LORD HAS MADE!  (A must read)

Holy Father holds historic meeting with ecclesial movements and new communities
Pope John Paul II , May 30, 1998 - Eve of Pentecost

It was stunning!

A half million members of ecclesial movements and new communities from around the world gathered in St Peter's Square on Saturday afternoon, 30 May, for an unprecedented meeting with Pope John Paul II. Prayer, song, Scripture readings and personal testimonies marked the Prayer Vigil held on the eve of Pentecost, which lasted into the early evening. The Holy Father was greeted enthusiastically on his arrival and listened to the personal testimonies given by the founders of the Focolare Movement, the Neocatechumenal Way, the Arche communities and Communion and Liberation. The Pope then gave the following address in Italian. Here is a translation.

"Suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit" (Acts 2: 2-3)
